Gitwangak
The Village of Kitwanga, also known as Gitwangak, is located on the Stewart-Cassiar Highway 37, 4 km north of the junction with the Yellowhead Highway 16. It has been designated a National Historic Site. You can explore the history of the First Nations of the Northwest at the Kitwanga Fort National Historic Site.
Kitwanga has a population of approximately 480. The area has nurtured northwest coast native cultures for over 7,000 years with the Gitksan and Wet’suwet’en peoples always living here near where the Skeena River meets the Bulkley River. The nearest communities are Hazelton (48 km) and Terrace (80 km).
Gitanyow
The Village of Gitanyow, formerly known as Kitwancool is 20 km north of Gitwangak on Highway 37. The people are organized into eight historic Houses (Wilp) and governed by a traditional matriarchal system.
The area is famous for its totem poles. One of the oldest totem poles in Gitanyow is the “Hole in the Ice” totem erected in about 1850. A small local history museum is located in the town.
